Unbeknownst to Gene Autry, Pat Buttram has been corresponding with a mail-order sweetheart, Adele Tompkins, and has sent her Gene's picture as his own. Gene insists on going with Pat to pick up Adele at the stage line, and they are just in time to foil a holdup. Adele, however, thinking Gene is her man, latches onto him. Gene tries to get her off his neck because Pat wants her on his. Meanwhile, Jan Carter, one of the stagecoach passengers, gets in touch with outlaw leader Bryant Morgan and they arrange a bank holdup. Everything goes according to plan and just as Morgan is about to abscond with the gold, Jan and Gene arrive to reveal it was all a plot to trap him. Not only is Morgan a thief, but he also murdered Jan's brother. After a spectacular chase, Gene saves Adele from a runaway wagon while Pat is thrown from his horse. Adele, feeling sorry for him, nurses Pat back to health and decides she prefers him after all, much to Gene's relief.
